Norman Wells

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is negotiating a self-government agreement with the Norman Wells Land Corporation and the Federal Government.

In 2005, the Norman Wells Land Corporation (NWLC) wrote the Federal Government and requested that self-government negotiations begin. Participants in the Sahtu Dene and Métis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement chose to divide the Sahtu Settlement Area into three Districts - the NWLC is part of the Tulita District.

The draft Framework Agreement is based on the Deline Self-Government model with changes to reflect the governance aspirations of the Métis of Norman Wells.  The Parties have set a goal of reaching a final agreement within four years or sooner.

Negotiations are in the early stages.
