Salt River First Nation

In December 2001, The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) Cabinet members approved the Salt River First Nation Treaty Settlement Agreement. The Agreement was ratified by the Salt River First Nation (SRFN) and then signed by the Federal Government in March 2002.  Under the Treaty Settlement Agreement, the SRFN receives a capital transfer of approximately $83 million from the Federal Government. The Treaty Settlement Agreement also provides for 102,400 acres, or 414 square kilometres, of land to be established as reserve land. The land is in multiple parcels, dispersed within and outside of the town of Fort Smith.

On September 5, 2008, through an Order-in-Council, the Federal Government established approximately 60% of the Salt River First Nation Indian Reserve. Creation of the balance of the reserve has been deferred due to logistical problems. The survey work required for creation of the reserve is 70% complete. Settlement lands that were not available for inclusion in the initial reserve, for reasons such as lack of legal surveys, may be added to the initial reserve or form additional reserves in the future, under separate Orders-in-Council.
