Treaty Land Entitlement (Specific Claims) Agreements

Treaty land entitlement negotiations are intended to fulfill the written versions of historic Treaties signed in the NWT, Treaties 8 and 11. These negotiations can result in agreements that create Reserves within the meaning of the Indian Act. These agreements usually include a financial component for the First Nation in compensation for delayed fulfillment of certain Treaty provisions.

Treaty Land Entitlement negotiations in the NWT are guided by the Federal Specific Claims Policy.
