Tulita

The Government of the Northwest Territories (GNWT) is negotiating a self-government agreement with Tulita, as represented by the Tulita Yamoria Community Secretariat, and the Federal Government.

Tulita envisions a self-government agreement that is based on the values and principles of Yamoria, a great medicine man in Dene history.

In 2002, the Sahtu Dene and Métis of Tulita wrote the Federal Government and requested that self-government negotiations begin. The Tulita Yamoria Community Secretariat leads self-government negotiations for that Sahtu the Dene and Métis of Tulita. Participants in the Sahtu Dene and Métis Comprehensive Land Claim Agreement chose to divide the Sahtu Settlement Area into three Districts.

In 2003, work started on a Process and Schedule Agreement to guide negotiations for the three parties. The Tulita Self-Government Framework Agreement was initialled in 2004 and signed in Tulita on March 16, 2005.

Negotiations are now proceeding towards an Agreement-in-Principle.
