Welcome to the web site of the Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations (DAAIR).
The Department Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations is committed to the successful conclusion and implementation of Aboriginal land, resource and self-government agreements in the Northwest Territories. We strive to support the aspirations of Aboriginal peoples in the Northwest Territories (NWT) while recognizing the importance of balancing their collective rights with the individual rights of all NWT residents.
Our web site provides information on land, resource and self-government negotiations currently taking place throughout the NWT. Additionally, you can find copies of agreements that have been completed, descriptions of settled and ongoing claims and maps. An overview of our implementation work and our policy approach to negotiations is also provided.
The Northwest Territories is an important contributor to the fabric of Canada, which is, in turn, a member country of the circumpolar community. Our department works to build strong relationships with northern governments on areas of common interest and towards a common vision for the political development of the NWT.
Members of the 16th Legislative Assembly have made it a priority to see the Government of the Northwest Territories fulfill its implementation responsibilities for existing Aboriginal rights agreements, and to strive to reach final agreements in ongoing negotiations. The Department of Aboriginal Affairs and Intergovernmental Relations is dedicated to ensuring that progress is made towards achieving these important goals.
